REWE

In Customer Service on November 23, 2008 by sutini Tagged: , , , ,

A couple of days, okay,a week or so back. I went to the mall here in the city to get some Christmas Chocolate Calender for my nieces and nephew back in Singapore. So I went down to the ground floor of the mall where there is a supermarket called REWE to get it.

As I was browsing around and found what I was looking for, decided to purchase and head to the cashier. I was in the line and an old lady was in front of me paying for her groceries. So I waited, the line started to get long due to the fact that ONE-UNO-SATU-EIN-UN(I could go on with international word for ONE) cashier counter is available. What would a cashier that has basic customer service skills do with this situation?. First, she must call in the other cashier to open the other counter or worst case,if there is no other cashier available, she must clear the line as quickly as possible. What did she do?. Talked to her follow colleagues who were heading out for their breaks or where ever it was they were going but from the look of it(carrying their wallets and cellphone)they were out for their breaks.

It was a good 5-6 minutes that she was talking to them and what was the reaction of the rest of the people in the line?. We were mad. What did we do?. Nothing. Why?. It’s just the way it is here. There is YOUR answer dear government of Germany. Are you going to do anything about it?. No. Plain and simple. The typical mindset of,I would say,75% or more Germans here. It could be that the temperature in winter drops to minus 10 or something and I reckon it froze the brain that they have there in their heads. It hurts to read what I have to say but look around and see how well you’re being treated to by the Sales Personnel here. I am not saying that I do not see good customer service here in Germany but Germans can do much better at it. I believe they can. What say you?.

  1. Hi Sutini,

Germans respect individuals as waitresses, assistants, sellors more than other nations. Ass-licking to make s.o. buy s.th. is considered insincere and disgusting. We prefer to give you quality and not superficial politeness. Therefor s.o. needs patience here. Its boring sometimes.
Intercultural understanding is a hobby of mine and I ve heard that the face-threatening act (politeness in practice) is quiet important in China. I prefer informal behaviour as “slaping actions”.

Don’t mind just kiss, see y

  2. Hi Johannes!

Over the years that I visited Germany(over three months of stay each visit)I have noticed and experience the customer service in Germany needs a lot of “cleaning up”.

To achieve the overall shopping experience. With that I meant, not only with great quality BUT equally great customer service. In Singapore, the government is putting a lot of pressure on the retailers to exercise great customer service. Ask this question to yourself. Why do you keep coming to that particular store(besides the pretty sales girls working in there!-then again that is another reason why customers come back to the store always)First,is the quality of the product, second, the customer service and third, is the OVERALL shopping experience.

The moment you enter the store, are you greeted?. When you are looking for help, is the sales personnel prompt? The end of the whole shopping(ending at the cashier)is it fast and your every needs are catered?. If you leave the store feeling extremely happy and satisfied of the help given by the sales personnel-then I would say that is the OVERALL great customer service and quality. But if you leave feeling very bad about the shopping experience, will you be going back there? No, I don’t think so. If you do, then I’ve got nothing to say about that.

  3. dear Sutini,

a nice deal should flow smoothly. ok. anyway I prefer everybody to be authentic. If service is boring and not useful it’s not a nice shopping. Anyway I don’t go shopping to buy feelings from the sales people. But you re right if they are naturally and in a good mood it’s a great shopping.

First,is the quality of the product.

Do you sell me s.th. today?

Have a nice day and try to be late on wednesday!

  4. Hi Johannes,

I agree, quality comes first-then the customer service. Sell you something? Careful now, my salesmanship is really good. And I sell products with pure honesty :)
“Have a nice day and try to be late on wednesday!”-I will try to be late on Wednesday! :D Oh, and Happy Valentines’ Day Johannes!

  5. Hi Sutini,

yes, ok. Das ist nett. I try to be more careful now.
Morgen ist Karneval in Deutschland. Du kannst dich verkleiden und komisch sein.
    Grüße Johannes
